A Gift

The sun rose to clear skies on Sunday morning after two days of rain. My boots squished through the puddles and the mud on the path. Birdsong floated in the air from every direction.

“Good morning. Good morning,” sang the cardinal.

“Welcome ba….ck. Welcome ba….ck,” cried the chickadee.

“Where have you been? What have you been doing?” chattered the goldfinch.

“Look at me….,” trilled the towhee. “Up here. Up here….”

The melody wove its spell. My breathing slowed. My mind fell silent.

Flowers covered the branches of a Crabapple tree in the gardens at the Arboretum. An Eastern Towhee sang from a tree on the edge of the woods. I had to look for a while to find him. He flew over the path to another tree and continued his song. Bunches of Blue Phlox flowers edged the path in the woods. Flowers brightened a tree on the edge of the meadow. Many more Dutchman’s-breeches flowers were blooming than the last time I visited on April 11th. The May-apple leaves were nearly a foot tall. I saw Trout-lily leaves near the May-apple leaves. Wood Sorrel flowers waved in the breeze close to the ground. I will be returning soon to take their portraits. It was too windy on Sunday. A White-throated Sparrow rested for a moment. An Eastern Bluebird watched from a tree near the gravel parking lot.

When I left home early in the morning, the sunlight had just reached the flowering trees by the rock terrace. An American Robin built a nest on the ledge next to my garage last week. I saw a few branches on the ledge on Thursday. By Sunday, the nest was finished.

Pictures!! More and better. Very cool. I think I like the crabapple flowers best in this group of flora and fauna. 🙂 There’s a lot of beauty around us if we choose to look.

      Hi Shady 🙂
Thanks for visiting and your kind words. 🙂 There were flowers on two of the Crabapple trees and buds on the others on Sunday. The spring growing season is speeding by. There are lots of pretty flowers to look at now and more on the way. 🙂
