Every morning after waiting for the Bald Eagles by the cottonwood tree, I walked by the marsh. On most of the days, there were at least a few sparrows perched on the reeds. I could hear the songs of others tucked in the reeds. I started leaving bird seed on the ice in the marsh and on the snow beside it at the end of January. On the morning of February 1st, it snowed. The temperature was near freezing with a 12 mph wind from the east-northeast. I draped a bandana and a plastic bag over the camera and went to the park. I left bird seed by the marsh and then walked around for a while. When I returned to the marsh, the Song Sparrows and the American Tree Sparrows were busy picking up the bird seed. I stood with my back to the wind and watched. A few of them came within a foot of me. The American Tree Sparrows spend their summers in the very far north. The Song Sparrows stay around all year.

The photos of the sparrows in the snow reminded me of a photo my Dad took in 1967 of my sister, my Mom and me at the train station.

My sister, my Mom, and me at the train station, 1967.

The snow has melted. Today, it is a delightful 72 degrees and the windows are open. I have spent the day thinking of the spring flowers that will soon be sending up shoots. It is a happy thought.

Take care and thanks for reading.

Those are some hardy little birds. One would think they would have flown south. I wonder if they can feel happiness at the change of seasons.

      Hi Shady 🙂
I don’t know. They seem like cheerful little birds to me. They were chirping at one another all while picking up the bird seed that day. Other days, I have heard them singing. I think 4 or 5 Song Sparrows live in the marsh. I remember seeing them last summer.

You guys all looked very happy. And very prepared for the cold.

      Hi Shady 🙂
We were all bundled up. 🙂 I remember liking snow when I was young. It meant sledding and making snowmen and snow angles. I wasn’t trying to drive a car or go running back then. 🙂
